There are hundreds of driving schools throughout the UK in various forms, whether they are independently run schools with a fleet of cars, national driving schools, or one man driving instructors. Some driving schools also provide HGV, LGV, or motorbike licences.

Driving instructors and schools in the UK are required by law to be registered with the DSA (Driving Standards Agency). To be DSA registered, the company must pass a three-part exam and also undertake frequent ‘check tests’.

There are many nationally recognised driving schools such as AA or BSM. You might prefer to use an independent company but providing the company you choose is DSA registered, your instructor will be highly qualified and skilled for your tuition.

Before you choose your driving instructing company, find out how much experience the company has, what colour licence they have, red or green (red indicates they are still learning to be instructors), what qualifications the company or instructors have, and if you will have the same instructor throughout your tuition.

Many driving schools offer packages where you can buy lessons in bulk and receive a discount, or get a free re-test if you fail first time.

Most importantly, choose a driving school or instructor you feel comfortable with. Take the lessons at your own pace and listen to your instructor’s valuable advice and guidance.
